Analysis Report on the Transformation and Upgrading of China's Large Forging Industry

Release time:2020-02-13

Wuxi's machinery and equipment industry has once again achieved a significant milestone: China Forging Talent Network learned that the world's largest-tonnage hydraulic press recently rolled off the production line and was put into operation at the Jiangyin Port Industrial Development Zone. This "giant" was independently developed and manufactured by Jiangsu Guoguang Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd., reaching a massive capacity of 19,500 tons—surpassing the previous record of 18,500 tons held by CITIC Heavy Industries. Cheng Xianbiao, a researcher at China National Research Institute of Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd., who participated in the R&D and design process, told reporters that this powerful press can seamlessly forge and shape heavy-duty components—including those needed for aircraft carrier decks, large ball valves, and nuclear power facilities—into single, integrated pieces.

Inside the production workshop of Guoguang Heavy Machinery, this "giant" hydraulic press is currently forging a 90-ton marine steering gear shaft—the company's very first product since the machine was put into operation. The massive steel column is effortlessly reshaped again and again under the press, almost as if it were being kneaded like dough. Chairman Zhang Guofang explained that previously, the largest workpiece the company had produced was an 88-ton steel ingot. However, with the newly commissioned hydraulic press boasting a maximum forging capacity of 450 tons—more than five times greater than before—the plant’s production capability has soared dramatically. What’s more, the advanced technology embedded in this equipment allows Guoguang to now independently manufacture key large-scale rotors essential for domestic nuclear, hydro, and wind power equipment, significantly reducing reliance on imported products while cutting costs substantially.

"Besides boasting the world’s largest forging hydraulic press tonnage, this machine also delivers the highest clamping force and clamping torque currently available globally—setting a new industry benchmark. Moreover, its advanced control capabilities place it among the best in the world," Zhang Guofang told reporters. He added that, thanks to overcoming critical technical challenges in manufacturing large-scale forgings, the company now holds absolute pricing power for these high-value components in the market, significantly strengthening its core competitive edge. Notably, once the hydraulic press is fully operational, Guoguang Heavy Machinery plans to gradually introduce to the market several cutting-edge products weighing over 100 tons each—such as large-scale hydrogenation units and turbine rotors."
