Sichuan Crane Factory Explains Overload Protection Devices for Cranes

Release time:2020-02-13

The crane overload protection device, also known as the overload limiter, can measure and display multiple parameters, such as lifting capacity, three-phase current, average current, three-phase voltage, average voltage, cumulative operating time, and total number of overload events. It provides protection against issues like overcurrent, undervoltage, voltage imbalance, motor stall, short circuit, phase failure, phase sequence errors, and overvoltage. When the lifting equipment shuts down automatically due to overload conditions, it directly displays a fault code, offering users valuable guidance for troubleshooting.

The overload protection system includes two types: a load weight limiter and a lifting moment limiter.

1. Lifting Capacity Limiter

Primarily used on bridge (gantry) cranes, it serves to limit the lifting capacity. When the load exceeds the rated lifting weight, the crane automatically stops moving upward and can only lower the load downward, providing essential safety protection.

2. Torque Limiter

The torque limiter is divided into a luffing jib torque limiter and a trolley-swinging torque limiter.

For mobile cranes that typically use a luffing jib for variable-amplitude operations, torque limiters are commonly employed to provide overload protection.

For tower cranes that use a trolley for luffing, weight limiters and moment limiters are typically employed together to provide overload protection.

Key Technical Data

1 • Early warning function : When the lifting capacity ≥ 90% At rated weight, a low-frequency audio-visual alarm is triggered.

2 • Alarm protection : When the lifting capacity ≥ 100% At the rated weight, a high-frequency audio-visual alarm is triggered; if delayed for a certain period, ( Manually settable ) Afterward, if the alarm persists, the system automatically cuts off the lifting circuit, preventing any lifting actions, while simultaneously activating a continuous loud audible alarm and causing the alarm indicator light to flash rapidly at high frequency.

3 – Immediate protection : When the lifting capacity ≥ 105% At the rated weight, immediately disconnect the lifting circuit, preventing any lifting action, while simultaneously activating a prolonged audible alarm and causing the alarm indicator light to flash rapidly at a high frequency.

4 – Overload Event Log : When operating normally, the crane records the number of overload occurrences.

5 • Cumulative Work Hour Record : Record the total operating time of the crane.
