A crane is a versatile lifting and material-handling machine capable of vertically lifting and horizontally moving heavy loads within a specific range; it’s also commonly referred to as a jib crane, hoist, or traveling crane. Cranes are classified as material-handling equipment. They are widely used in various settings, including indoor and outdoor warehouses, factories, docks, and open-air storage yards. In ancient China, the "ju," a device used for irrigating farmland, served as an early prototype of the arm-type crane. By the 14th century, rotating-boom cranes powered by human or animal energy had emerged in Western Europe. In the early 19th century, bridge cranes were introduced, marking the beginning of using metal components—such as axles, gears, and lifting attachments—for critical wear parts. Later in the same century, steam-powered cranes began to take shape.
Lifting machinery can be categorized into light and compact lifting equipment, bridge cranes, jib cranes, and elevators, among others. 1. **Light and Compact Lifting Equipment** Light and compact lifting equipment is characterized by its portability, compact design, simple operation, and limited working range. Typically, this type of equipment features only a single lifting mechanism, enabling the load to perform just one type of vertical motion—either lifting or lowering. Examples of such equipment include KBK cranes, manual (air-powered or electric) hoists, jacks, winches, and similar devices.
